Abstract:

The planning research of foreign national monuments started early and is rich in types, the concept and connotation are similar to that of China’s revolutionary monuments, so it is important to carry out the planning research of foreign national monuments for China’s revolutionary monument planning research as its reference value. This paper reviews the planning research of foreign national memorial sites and finds that the themes of foreign national memorial sites are mainly political and military. Based on this, we sorts out the relevant research history and summarized the following four aspects of the research content based on the existing results, including the protection planning research of the national battlefield sites, the planning research of the newly-built national memorials (monuments), the centralized planning research of the war memorial cemeteries and the reconstruction planning research of war memorial cities. Drawing on international experiences in national memorial site planning, this paper suggests that China's research on revolutionary memorial site planning should strengthen studies on the protection and planning management of battlefield sites; enhance theoretical research and historical studies on the development of revolutionary memorial sites; and emphasize urban-level planning approaches for revolutionary memorial sites.
