The Domestic and International Research Progress of Temporary Use and Its Value and Connotation
Abstract:
With the advent of new needs and the criticism of formal planning, urban regeneration is embracing the perspective of public participation and process orientation. Temporary use, as a phenomenon born in Western culture, introduces collaborative planning methods and flexible perspectives of time. More and more international scholars pay attention to this methodology, because it makes up for the weakness of formal planning in terms of democracy and sustainability. This paper put forward the research question of temporary use through vertical and horizontal comparisons, and then sorts out the development and research progress of temporary use. Referring to Lefebvre’s theories about critique of everyday life and the production of space, the connotation of temporary use is discussed from three aspects: adaptability, process and initiative. In the end, this paper discusses the issues of Chinese urban regeneration while detailing the characteristics of temporary use, in order to provide a theoretical basis for the application and development of temporary use in Chinese context.
