The Evolution and Regeneration Enlightenment of Markets in London Since 20th Century
Abstract:
Market is an indispensable component of urban daily life and an important place for citizens to engage in commercial activities. In reality, due to the lack of effective planning and management, as well as the widespread problems of “dirty, disorderly and poor”, market space has become an urgent focus in urban regeneration work. This paper takes London, the UK as an example to sort out the historical evolution process of its market spaces since the 20th century, especially the indepth analysis of the bottom-up and top-down renewal process after its decline. The results show that renewed market spaces activate urban vitality while increasing economic efficiency. Through the analysis of several typical market renewal case strategies, it summarizes the relevant practices of London in building a market system, providing policy support, encouraging public participation, reviewing existing laws and regulations, inheriting market culture, and establishing rules and regulations, in order to provide inspiration and valuable experience for the transformation of markets in China.
