Abstract:

The conservation and utilization of industrial heritage, as a long-term topic in Japan, is of great significance to the country’s social economy. In addition to the research on heritage conservation itself, Japan also pays attention to the exploration of its practical value, especially the incorporation of industrial heritage into the national policy of tourism development. This has made great progress in both aspects, promoted orderly development of Japan’s territorial space and the organic renewal of cities, and ensured the continuity and improvement of urban and rural cultural landscape. Through a review of the country’s relevant national policies and events, this paper analyzes the development and modes of strategy of industrial heritage conservation and utilization in Japan, and examines cases of industrial heritage conservation and utilization for the purpose of regional revitalization. It can be found that there are some characteristics worth learning in terms of institutional framework, organizational approach, cooperation logic, such as paying attention to the synthetic effects brought by applying for world cultural heritage, strengthening the characteristic value of operational heritage, and highlighting the mechanism of public participation.
