Abstract:
Could urban spaces affect industry choices? This paper examines the interaction between urban space and industry from the perspective of urban evolution. It introduces the path-dependence method to construct an analytical framework for the interactive evolution of urban spaces and industries, and applys this framework to carry out empirical research on the Dutch industrial city Eindhoven, to analyse in detail the successful industrial transformation processes of the city in three phases, especially focuses on how urban space affects industrial choices at each phase. It reveals that urban space affects industry choice at every critical juncture, and in different forms at different times. Therefore, when Chinese cities facing industrial transformation, they should calmly examine their own industrial development history and inherent urban space conditions, so as to find suitable direction of industrial transformation.
